MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 22, 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 22 January 2010

Dear Parents and Students,

Overall, I would have to say that the Middle School has students who are rule abiding. Students' behavior is such that teachers are allowed to teach in the classroom and other students are allowed to learn. This is an extremely critical aspect of student behavior in a school system that our students understand and for the most part, comply with on a daily basis.

Also the dress and appearance of our students at the Academy is a very important issue that sets us apart from other school systems. Again, for the most part, I am always pleased with the way that our students represent the Academy not only while they are here on campus, but when they leave campus as well. We normally received very complimentary remarks regarding our students' behavior and appearance from people

who may be seeing MVA students for the first time. This ability for our Middle School students to make "good choices" in how they look, how they speak, and how they behave will pay dividends for them throughout their lives.

Two issues that I am addressing with the student body are:

#1        The hair style of the boys who attend MVA's Middle School

#2        The length of  skirts and/or skorts of the Middle School girls

Some of our boys need to get their hair cut or styled to comply with the school's policy regarding the grooming and hair care. Some of our girls need to have the length of their skirts and skorts comply with the school's policy regarding the length of these items.

On page 18 of the Middle School Student Planner and Handbook it is stated: "Neatness, grooming and proper hair care receive the same special attention as student dress at Montverde Academy. Radical hairstyles or dyed hair is not permitted. Boys' hair should be kept short away from the face and eyes and may not touch the collar of his shirt."

On page 17 of the Middle School Student Planner and Handbook it is stated: "Dresses (skirts) and skorts must not be shorter than three inches from the top of the knee." (Use 3x5 index card as a guide.)

I addressed the Middle School students concerning these issues on Wednesday, January 20. The students and faculty were told of the two concerns that I had; they were told that I would be writing a Middle School letter that would be posted on our .net and Constant Contact sites; and they were told that I would be monitoring these two issues more closely starting on Monday, January 25.

In order for us to maintain the image that we would like portray not only here at the Academy bur when we are away from the school, these two issues need to be enforced and I am asking for your support regarding the hair styles of the boys and the length of the skirts and skorts of the girls. The compliance of these two issues makes us who were are and does set us apart from other academic institution that may not have this uniformity within their dress code.

Yours in education,

Warren Delmolino
